Australian Caravan Market Monitor

What is entering Australia’s caravan market?

A monthly view of caravan and camper trailer supply activity, manufacturer concentration and tare-weight mix using official BITRE RAV estimates.

Published 10 August 2026 · Data through June 2026 · Market supply, not retail sales

44,297caravan and camper trailer RAV entries over the latest 12 months
3,473estimated entries in June 2026, down 6.4% from June 2025
70.4%of rolling entries had tare weight above 2,000 kg and up to 3,000 kg
3,700second-stage campervan entries over 12 months, reported separately
Do not call these sales. A RAV entry records a vehicle or trailer being provided to the Australian market. It does not establish that the asset was retailed, registered, privately purchased or financed in that month. BITRE also warns its caravan estimate may not fully enumerate all caravan and camper trailer entries.
Rolling activity

Monthly caravan and camper trailer entries

The series combines the published total from each monthly BITRE workbook. It is more useful than comparing a single month, but it remains a supply indicator rather than buyer demand.

Reading the pattern: January was the low point in this 12-month window and October the high point. One year is not enough evidence for a durable seasonal rule, so the page does not forecast the next month.

Manufacturer activity

Leading caravan and camper trailer makes

BITRE publishes makes accounting for approximately the top 80% over the previous 12 months. “Other makes” remains in the total but is excluded from this leaderboard.

Buyer use: entry volume can indicate how much new supply a make is placing into the market. It does not measure dealer stock, delivery time, resale value, build quality or warranty performance. Those require separate evidence.

Buyer and tow-vehicle context

Tare-weight mix

The 2,000–3,000 kg tare bands accounted for 31,165 entries over 12 months. This concentration matters for payload and tow-vehicle planning, but tare is only the unladen starting point.

Tare is not towing capacity. A buyer must separately check aggregate trailer mass (ATM), gross trailer mass, payload, tow-ball mass, tow-vehicle limits, gross combination mass and the plated limits for the exact caravan and tow vehicle. Finance affordability does not establish a safe or legal combination.
Definitions

What the caravan data does—and does not—describe

These distinctions prevent a supply spreadsheet from being presented as a buyer or finance market.

Caravan
A towable trailer designed for accommodation. BITRE derives this category from trailer make and model data rather than a complete standalone field.
Camper trailer
A towable camping trailer included with caravans in the published RAV estimate.
Campervan
A motor vehicle converted or completed for accommodation. Second-stage campervan entries are reported separately and are not added to the caravan total.
RAV entry
An entry on the Register of Approved Vehicles indicating an asset can be provided to the Australian market. It is not a retail sale.
Tare weight
The unladen mass of the trailer as defined for its compliance record. Added water, gas, batteries, accessories and cargo consume payload.
ATM
Aggregate trailer mass: the maximum permitted laden mass of the trailer when not coupled, subject to its plate and applicable requirements.
New caravan activity
This page uses RAV entries as a timely new-supply indicator. The source does not identify delivery, sale price, buyer type or finance method.
Used caravan market
Second-hand listings, transfers and transaction prices are not measured in this dataset. Fleet age should not be invented from RAV entry data.
Methodology

Calculation rules and downloads

The static tables and charts are generated from the same versioned JSON so the visible page can be reconciled.

Rules

  • Monthly total = the published caravan and camper trailer total in that month’s BITRE workbook.
  • Rolling total = BITRE’s latest published last-12-month total, not the sum of rounded chart labels.
  • Make rankings exclude “Other makes” but the market total includes it.
  • Weight share uses unrounded source counts and the complete published 12-month total.
  • Source revisions are retained; AFA does not silently smooth spikes or replace official figures.
