Fleet age profile
Manufacture year is a replacement-pressure indicator, not condition or remaining useful life.
Registered fleet mix
Heavy rigid trucks account for just over half of this three-class truck population.

Private truck buying signals
Rolling supply activity and installed-fleet age provide useful context for private buyers, sellers and operators without pretending the open files identify each buyer or transaction.
Rolling 12-month new supply activity
Medium and heavy goods vehicles entered on the Register of Approved Vehicles. Entries are not retail sales or finance settlements.

Vehicle and market definitions
- Private buyer
- A non-government purchaser. The open RAV and registration datasets do not contain buyer type.
- New supply / RAV entry
- A vehicle entered as suitable to be provided to the Australian market. It is not necessarily sold or registered that month.
- Used truck
- An already registered truck offered or transferred to another owner. National monthly used-truck transactions are not measured here.
- Light commercial
- A market term commonly covering goods-carrying utes, vans and cab-chassis. Boundaries vary by dataset, so the source definition must be stated.
- Heavy commercial
- A broad market or fleet term for larger commercial vehicles. It is not interchangeable with a specific gross vehicle mass class.
- Medium goods vehicle
- RAV category for a goods vehicle above 3.5 tonnes and up to 12 tonnes gross vehicle mass.
- Heavy goods vehicle
- RAV category for a goods vehicle above 12 tonnes gross vehicle mass.
- Light rigid truck
- Registered rigid truck above 3.5 tonnes and up to 8 tonnes gross vehicle mass.
- Heavy rigid truck
- Registered rigid truck above 8 tonnes gross vehicle mass.
- Articulated truck
- A prime mover coupled to a semitrailer, with the combination treated as an articulated vehicle.
Interpretation: RAV entries provide a timely new-supply indicator. Registered fleet age provides replacement context. Neither series measures private sales, used transactions or finance settlements.
Commonwealth fleet composition
At 30 June 2026, the Department of Finance reported 27,318 assets with an indicative value of $985 million. Of those assets, 77.6% were owned and 22.4% leased.
Definitions, calculations and downloads
The calculations are published so another analyst can inspect or reproduce the result.
Calculation rules
- Truck fleet = light rigid + heavy rigid + articulated trucks.
- State share = state truck count divided by the national three-class total.
- Replacement pressure = vehicles manufactured in 2013 or earlier divided by vehicles with a stated manufacture year.
- Unknown/not-stated models are excluded from leaderboards, not from fleet denominators.
- Percentages are calculated from unrounded counts and displayed to one decimal place.
