Australian Ute Market Data 2026 | AFA Research
Australian Ute Market Monitor

A clearer view of Australia’s ute fleet and new supply

A conservative registered-fleet estimate and monthly tracked-model activity index built without treating vans, campervans and every other light commercial as a ute.

Published 10 August 2026 · Fleet reference date 31 January 2025 · RAV data through June 2026

3.47mregistered vehicles matched to the AFA ute and pickup taxonomy
211,983tracked ute-model RAV entries across the latest 12 monthly releases
81.8%of June light-commercial entries represented by tracked ute models
40.7%of identified utes with a stated year were manufactured in 2013 or earlier
There is no official BITRE “ute” class. BITRE publishes light commercial vehicles, which include utes, vans and other vehicles. AFA includes only exact make/model pairs in the published taxonomy and excludes ambiguous families such as LandCruiser, Patrol and Defender where model-level records do not isolate the body style. The result is reproducible, but it is not every ute.

Monthly ute-model activity index

Each month aggregates recognised ute and pickup models appearing in BITRE’s published top light-commercial make/model table. Because lower-ranked makes are unavailable, this is a tracked-model lower bound—not an official sales total.

December spike retained. The December workbook contains unusually high entries for some models, including Triton. These are official source values and may reflect entry timing or later revisions. AFA preserves them and identifies the issue rather than smoothing the series.
Registered fleet

Identified utes and pickups by state

Queensland has the largest identified population in this taxonomy, followed closely by New South Wales. These are point-in-time registrations—not purchases during 2025.

Identified fleet age

Fleet age provides replacement context. It does not prove condition, usage, ownership history or a used purchase.

Model signals

Current and rolling model activity

HiLux led the recognised ute models in June. Monthly ranks can move sharply because RAV timing is not the same as retail delivery timing.

Why the two 12-month totals differ: the headline 211,983 is the sum of the tracked-model index extracted from each monthly workbook. The model table’s final column is BITRE’s latest June workbook look-back for each published model. Revisions and table coverage can make them differ, so they are not combined.

State model mix

Identified ute models by state

Choose a state to compare the registered model population.

Model denominator: percentages use the complete identified ute population for the selected state. They are not shares of new sales and do not include ambiguous models excluded by the taxonomy.
Definitions

How to interpret the ute monitor

The definition matters because “ute”, “pickup” and “light commercial” are not interchangeable source categories.

Identified ute fleet
Light-commercial registration records matching an exact make and model in the versioned AFA taxonomy.
Tracked ute entry
A matching model appearing in the BITRE top light-commercial make/model RAV table for that month.
Light commercial vehicle
The broader BITRE category containing utes, vans and other goods-carrying vehicles. It is not used as a ute total.
RAV entry
A vehicle entered on the Register of Approved Vehicles as suitable to be provided to the Australian market. It is not necessarily retailed that month.
Private buyer
A non-government buyer. Open BITRE registration and RAV data do not expose buyer type, so private, business and government shares are not estimated here.
Used ute
An already registered vehicle offered or transferred to another owner. National used transactions and prices are not measured by this monitor.
Excluded ambiguous model
A family such as LandCruiser, Patrol or Defender where the available model field cannot reliably isolate a utility body from another body type.
Taxonomy version
The auditable list of included make/model pairs. New models require a deliberate reviewed update instead of automatic keyword matching.
Methodology

Reproduce the result

The taxonomy, derived datasets and calculation rules are public so an analyst can identify inclusions, exclusions and future classification changes.

Rules

  • Make and model values are normalised to uppercase and matched exactly—no loose keyword matching.
  • Unknown and not-stated models are never classified as utes.
  • Fleet shares use the identified taxonomy population, not all light commercials.
  • Older-fleet share = identified vehicles manufactured in 2013 or earlier divided by those with a stated manufacture year.
  • Monthly tracked share = identified published ute models divided by all light-commercial RAV entries for that month.
  • Buyer type, price, fuel consumption, towing capacity and payload are not present in these source files.
