About this estimate

Model chattel mortgage repayments, total interest and the balloon due at the end of the term. Use our indicative rate range or enter a rate you already know. No signup required.

Planning estimate only. Rates, fees and lender calculations vary. Establishment fees, ongoing fees and lender-specific payout calculations are excluded. A higher balloon lowers scheduled repayments but increases the lump sum due at the end. This is not a quote, approval or tax advice.

Use the tool as a range, not a quote

How to use an asset finance repayment calculator

Start with the same asset price and deposit across every scenario. Change one variable at a time — rate, term or balloon — and compare the scheduled repayment, total interest and final balloon together. A lower scheduled payment can still produce a larger total obligation.

A Repeatable Four-Step Comparison

1. Set the transaction

Enter the GST-inclusive asset price, cash deposit and whether the asset is new or used. Keep these inputs fixed across quotes.

2. Stress-test pricing

Use a current written rate where available; otherwise test low, middle and high assumptions from the rates methodology.

3. Test the balloon

Compare zero balloon with the proposed balloon. Record both the repayment change and the lump sum still due at the end.

4. Add excluded costs

Add lender fees, insurance, maintenance and any accountant-confirmed GST or tax cash flows outside the calculator.

How the Calculator Works & Assumptions

This calculator models a chattel mortgage using standard amortisation and the inputs shown. For product scope, eligibility and process context, read our business asset finance guide.

  • Rate range: loaded from AFA’s published planning assumptions for the selected asset type and condition. Enter a known rate to replace the range.
  • Balloon: calculated as a percentage of the amount financed, not the asset price. A larger balloon lowers scheduled repayments but leaves a larger lump sum at the end.
  • Term: the tool allows 1–7 years. Available terms depend on lender policy, asset age and useful life.
  • Fees: establishment and account fees vary by lender and are excluded from estimates.

What the outputs mean: the repayment is the scheduled finance payment under the assumptions shown; total interest is the modelled interest across the term; and the balloon is the final lump sum that remains due. None of these outputs includes lender fees or predicts approval.

All figures are estimates for general information only and do not constitute tax, legal or credit advice. Confirm tax treatment with your accountant and see official guidance from the ATO on the instant asset write-off, the ATO on claiming GST credits, and Moneysmart (ASIC).

Asset Finance Calculator FAQs

What is the difference between chattel mortgage and finance lease?

With a chattel mortgage the borrower owns the asset and the lender takes security. With a finance lease the financier owns the asset during the term. GST, deductions, residuals and end-of-term options differ. Compare the contract and obtain tax advice.

Which asset finance structure gives the best tax deduction?

There is no structure that always gives the best tax result. Eligibility depends on business use, GST registration, turnover, asset type, price and the rules for the relevant income year. This calculator models repayments, not a personalised tax outcome.

Can I claim GST on asset finance?

An eligible GST-registered business may be able to claim input tax credits for the creditable business-use portion. Cars can be subject to the GST car limit and other exceptions. Confirm the amount and timing with a registered tax agent.

What interest rates should I enter in the calculator?

Use the rate in a current written proposal when available. Otherwise test a low, middle and high planning scenario from the published rates page. A calculator assumption is not a rate quote; actual pricing depends on the applicant, asset and transaction.

Does the calculator show the real after-tax cost?

No. The calculator estimates finance repayments using the inputs shown. It does not determine eligibility for GST credits, deductions, depreciation or an instant asset write-off, and it does not replace accounting or tax advice.
